Political Ad Production Timeline

Build the schedule around approvals, not just render time. A finished file, legal sign-off, platform approval and actual publication are four different milestones.

Local draft and source check: . Not a publication date.

Four gates before release

First-cut reference: 3 days after eligibility, written scope, assets, approvals and agreed payment are confirmed. This is not final delivery or platform approval.

The authorized campaign team retains strategy, message, audience, budget and publishing decisions. The following is a production checklist, not a campaign plan or an offer to accept held work.

Approval record for each deliverable
GateRequired recordStop condition
1. EligibilitySponsor identity, jurisdiction, authorized representative, legal reviewer and distribution channels. Counsel-reviewed written scope for any proposed U.S. election-related work.No acceptance or payment while the U.S. hold remains.
2. Approved briefCampaign-approved script, claim sources, footage and music rights, likeness permissions and required sponsor and AI wording. No production from an unapproved script or unverified claim.
3. Production approvalAgreed scope and payment after acceptance; approved permitted treatment and sound; first-cut feedback and included revisions.A first cut is not a release master. Changed claims or assets return to approval.
4. Release approvalAuthorized campaign and legal reviewer approve each exact file, language, aspect ratio and disclaimer. Record the version and approval date. The campaign controls placement. Delivery does not establish distribution permission.

An illustrative 30-day production calendar

Count backward from the campaign's own approved release deadline. These are planning buffers, not election-law deadlines, booked capacity or recommended campaign timing. If a gate is unresolved, move the delivery date; do not compress legal review.

Illustrative checkpoints before a chosen release date
CheckpointProduction record
30 days beforeCollect sponsor, jurisdiction, reviewer, channel requirements and the campaign's deadline. Confirm whether the request is eligible at all.
21 days beforeObtain the approved script, source log, rights records, disclaimer wording and complete format list.
14 days beforeIf accepted, finish the permitted treatment and sound approvals. Reserve production time only after the gates are complete.
7 days beforeComplete revisions and reviewer checks for every version. The campaign verifies current platform cutoffs separately.
Several days beforeAfter release sign-off, the campaign's authorized publisher allows time for platform review, rejection or re-review.
Release dateCampaign records the actual published version and approval status. An uploaded or delivered file is not proof that an ad is live.

Platform timing is outside the production clock

Google says most ad reviews finish within one business day, but complex reviews take longer and edits restart review. Its guidance recommends submitting several days before a required start date.

Meta's 2026 notice blocks new political, electoral and social issue ads during the final week of the U.S. election campaign. Ads with a recorded impression before that period may continue. This source does not establish the exact cutoff hour. The campaign must check its current account rules; do not assume a newly edited version qualifies.

A shorter schedule cannot skip a gate

A request for an urgent edit does not clear the U.S. booking hold. Do not promise same-day release, a platform-review waiver or an unapproved new claim. Prefer supplied, permissioned recordings when authenticity matters; synthetic footage is not a substitute for evidence.

  • Name one campaign-authorized approver and its legal reviewer.
  • Check that the facts and official voting information remain current.
  • Recheck sponsor text, AI labels, audio and subtitles in the shortest version.
  • Keep a file register: filename, version, duration, format, language, source IDs, reviewer decisions and release status.
  • Return changed statements, speakers or rights to the relevant approval gate.

Sources and review status

Compiled with AI-assisted research from the official sources linked on this page, checked on 3 and 4 October 2026. A lawyer has not reviewed it. This is a production reference, not legal advice, a compliance certification or permission to book or publish an ad.

Filmito production references come from the existing local rate card and proposed safeguards. They have not been validated as a permissible U.S. service offering.

  1. Google Ads: About the ad review process

Most reviews take one business day; complex reviews can take longer. Editing starts review again. Not a guaranteed approval time.

  2. Meta: Preparing for the 2026 US midterm elections

Official post published 19 February 2026, updated 1 June 2026. Confirms final-week restriction and prior-impression condition, not an exact cutoff hour.
