Video ads by channel / LinkedIn

Video ads for LinkedIn.

4:5, captioned from the first frame, written for the two-second view and the thirty-second loop.

01

The medium

LinkedIn video autoplays in the feed with the sound muted by default, between posts from colleagues and competitors, in front of people who are at work or thinking about it. LinkedIn counts a view at two continuous seconds with half the video on screen, counts a completion at 97 percent, and recommends fifteen to thirty seconds so a film qualifies for every feed and Audience Network placement.

Two mechanics are easy to miss. A video under thirty seconds loops until thirty seconds of playback have passed, so a short film is seen more than once in a row and its last frame has to hand back to its first. And a Thought Leader Ad is not a company post at all: the creative is a named person's own post, with no headline, intro text or button added, and any edit has to come from that person.

LinkedIn also sells connected television now, through its Audience Network, in six, fifteen, thirty and sixty second lengths at a required loudness of minus 23 LUFS. The same B2B story can play silently on a phone at a desk and out loud on a living room screen, which argues for one film planned for both from the start.

How we build an ad for it

Directed by people, made with AI, finished by hand. You approve the script and the sound before any footage is made.

  1. 4:5 in the feed, captions from frame one

LinkedIn labels 4:5 the recommended ratio and the feed plays muted, so the film is composed at 720 by 900 with its words burned into the picture and an SRT file alongside. Nothing in the first frame depends on sound.

  2. The first two seconds decide the view

A view is two continuous seconds at half the frame on screen. The opening shot is a finished picture with movement already in it, and the proposition is readable, in text, before the second is over.

  3. Written for the loop

Under thirty seconds the film loops until thirty seconds have played, so a fifteen is seen twice. The last frame is designed to cut back to the first without a jolt, and the second viewing is where the detail lands.

  4. A named person, or the company

For a Thought Leader Ad the film is cut to sit inside a person's own post: their framing, their voice, no added headline or button, because LinkedIn allows none. For a company page the film carries the proof and the call to action itself.

  5. One film, two mixes

The feed version is silent-safe. The CTV version, for LinkedIn's connected television inventory, is remixed to minus 23 LUFS with the voice forward and delivered at an exact six, fifteen, thirty or sixty seconds.

  6. Specific beats slick

The audience can tell a real workflow from a stock one. We ask for your product screens, your figures and your customers' words, and nothing on screen is claimed that you have not approved in the script.

Questions about LinkedIn ads

What are LinkedIn's video ad specs?

MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio, between 75 KB and 500 MB, under 30 frames a second, three seconds to thirty minutes long. Ratios are 16:9 at 1920 by 1080, 1:1, 4:5 at 720 by 900 (the recommended ratio) and 9:16 at 720 by 1280. Captions go in as an SRT file.

How long should a LinkedIn video ad be?

LinkedIn recommends fifteen to thirty seconds so the film qualifies for every feed and Audience Network placement. Under thirty seconds the video loops until thirty seconds have played, so a fifteen is designed to be watched twice.

Does a LinkedIn video ad play with sound?

No. LinkedIn video ads autoplay in the feed with the sound muted by default, which is why LinkedIn itself strongly recommends captions. Our feed version reads without sound; the sound is there for the viewer who taps.

What is a Thought Leader Ad and what do you deliver for it?

An ad built from a person's own LinkedIn post rather than the company page, with no headline, intro text or button added. We deliver the film sized for the post and a suggested post text; the person publishes it and grants permission, and only they can edit it.

Can the same film run on LinkedIn's connected TV placement?

Yes, remixed. CTV ads are 16:9 at 1920 by 1080, in exact lengths of six, fifteen, thirty, forty-five, sixty, seventy-five or ninety seconds, with two-channel audio at minus 23 LUFS. We deliver that conform as a separate file.

Square, vertical or horizontal for LinkedIn?

4:5 is LinkedIn's recommended ratio for the feed on a phone. We compose 4:5 for the feed, keep 16:9 for your website and CTV, and add 1:1 or 9:16 only where the media plan calls for them.
